QA / Field Testing

Consistent sampling, correct methods, and tight documentation. Coordinate acceptance criteria with specs/WVDOH.

Sampling & Timing

  • Sample per ASTM C172; take from middle of load, not first/last discharge.
  • Start tests promptly; keep samples out of sun/wind; note time and truck ID.
  • Re-mix test portion before slump/air/cylinders as required.

Fresh Concrete Tests

  • Slump / Flow: ASTM C143 / C1611 (SCC) — level base, proper rodding/strokes.
  • Air content: ASTM C231 (pressure) or C173 (roll-a-meter for lightweight).
  • Temperature: ASTM C1064 — measure and record delivery temp.

Cylinders & Handling

  • ASTM C31 — make, finish, protect from vibration and moisture loss; initial cure within temp range.
  • Transport to the lab carefully; document chain-of-custody; avoid freezing or overheating.
  • Breaks per ASTM C39; compare to specified strength and acceptance criteria.

Acceptance & Documentation

  • Verify acceptance criteria (ACI 301/WVDOH) for strength/air/slump/tolerance.
  • Log admixtures, water additions, ambient/weather, and delays.
  • Share results rapidly with the team to adjust operations if needed.
