Specifications & Mixes

Align submittals with performance: strength, durability, pumpability/finishability, and environmental conditions.

Submittal Basics

  • State strength, exposure class, w/cm, air, cement & SCMs, admixtures, expected temps.
  • Include producer’s data: historical strength, target slump/flow, air range, aggregate sources.
  • Note placement method (pump/conveyor) and finish (trowel/broom/exposed).

Performance Targets

  • Durability: w/cm and air for freeze-thaw; SCMs for sulfate/chloride environments.
  • Workability: pumpability (paste/fines), finishing window, set control per season.
  • Strength: trial batches or historical data to justify proportions.

SCMs & Admixtures

  • Fly ash/slag/silica fume for durability/workability; adjust curing duration as needed.
  • WR/HRWR, air entrainers, retarders/accelerators—document intended dosages and interactions.
  • For LW concrete: pre-wetting, density/air method (ASTM C173), pump strategy.

WV Notes

  • Coordinate with WVDOH spec sections and project provisions; verify acceptance criteria.
  • Flag seasonal adjustments (hot/cold weather plans) and sawcut/curing strategy.
  • Identify placement logistics: access, pump line lengths, traffic control, testing locations.
